Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description

A silver metal and epoxied irregular shaped device 1 1/4 inch (3.18cm)in height, a representative of a sea turtle as seen from above, with a greenskin pattern on its head and flippers and white patterned shell, displaying aRed Cross bearing a silver Rod of Asclepius, the space between the sea turtleand scroll is light blue. Attached between the sea turtles flippers, a silver scroll inscribed in Hawaiian NAHU to the left,MAI O in the center and KE KOA tothe right which translates to BITE OF A WARRIOR, in Maroon.



Symbolism

Maroon and white (silver) are the traditional colors of the Army Medical Department. The Hawaiian green sea turtle known as Honusymbolizes good luck, endurance and long life. When lost, turtles are excellent navigators and often find their way home. The white pattern on the turtles shell suggests human teeth, further highlighting the units dental health mission. The Red Cross with the Rod of Asclepius symbolizes the units duties in medical care, aid and health.
